It would be fair to say Singstar is not a franchise that is geared towards someone like me (with let’s just call it “not a great signing voice”). But it has been a hugely popular series over the last ten or so years among its vibrant community and an ever present at many a party where not being able to sing was never a reason not to take part.

Some new features have been introduced to make the game more open and accessible. Greater online connectivity means you can challenge friends and challengers very easily. The new social media options means it has never been easier to share those moments with the world. The addition of a smart phone app to allow users use their phone in place of the mic removing the need for purchasing extra peripherals.

The disk comes with 30 hit songs including chart toppers both old and new like TLC’s Scrubs and Pharrell Williams Happy, with the option to purchase further songs from the store. Right now the store is a little bare but there is enough to get going with hopefully plans to add many more down the line.

The layout in game is nice and simple with no complicated menus or set up required. Playing songs, adding new players is all handled with a clean icon focused interface and simple single button presses.

Unfortunately that is about the scope of the package, outside of singing and getting a high score there is little else to do. It really is a party game, rather than something you could enjoy investing time into alone for any kind of an extended period of time.

Overall: Nice and clean with intuitive menus along with some nice social media and smart phone integrations means Singstar is a fun little party game that is easy to enjoy, but without any depth and a lack of lasting appeal it is really only for those party moments.

SCORE 2.5/5
