On me head son!!!...Yes. The age old question is upon us once more, and it’s going to be debated long into the night by football fans young & old. No! Not which came 1st the chicken or the egg, not PS3 or Xbox 360, rather which is better FIFA or PES (Pro Evo Soccer). So before the BONE-Idle 11 are caught offside, lets cross this bad boy into the box and see if we score...Gooaaallllll.
I have to admit that after playing previous instalments of FIFA I was NOT a big lover of the franchise. I felt that the game-play was more “Fantasy Football” rather than premier league, scoring 35 yard free kicks on demand and running past 5 or 6 players at ease is not my idea of football....well not on a console at least. While this kind of play has gradually been eroded by E.A from the titles over the years due to the more rewarding and simulative play of PES, when I got my hands on this game I was very pleasantly surprised I must admit.
The key difference with FIFA 10 over the previous games or indeed any other football game is the new 360 degree total control, this brilliant new addition really does make a supreme difference to the overall game. As it affects everything from shooting & free kicks to passing (especially all you super human dudes that play on manual). No longer are you running along a diagonal which really limit your options and feels awkward, especially when dribbling with elite players like messi and ronaldo, you now can make the slightest of adjustments when running both with and without the ball. Running to evade defenders and making precision like passes or angled runs has never been more fun or accurate for that matter. The game in general has been tweaked over an already impressive fifa 09, with ball physics very much spot on & player AI much more reliable with attacking runs and very good defensive cover. Another great touch I personally love is the tussle that ensues between attackers and defenders being overhauled, which is great to see and gives the game a more gritty edge. Nothing better than seeing a good old fashioned defender taking out an arrogant striker.....all perfectly legal like!!! |

Graphics are as solid as ever with a special mention to the kits complete with the latest flashy boots, with kits being exact replicas and not just the well known teams either. The stadia & pitches are very well done also, with different and custom patterns available should you wish to tweak your favourite stadium. Also there are so many different stadiums to choose from and then more options to download online if you wish. The wealth of options you get in the game is truly staggering, not only do you have main exhibition mode and online matches as you would expect. A manager mode is also included for good measure, and while no where near as accurate or comprehensive as say the Football Manager series, its a brave attempt to have something extra in an already complete total package. The biggest new add-on has to be the new “Virtual Pro” mode. Not to be confused with “Being a Pro” mode from previous games, you now can customise you player with your own downloadable “Game Face” courtesy of EA online. And the icing on the cake is that you are now able to use your new “Superstar” anywhere in the game, not just virtual pro mode. Any mode or tournament is available to boost his stats and abilities. I really love this as it does give you a huge incentive to keep playing long after the initial “WOW” factor is gone.

The accompanying soundtrack within the game is of usual high standard, with EA bringing “sexy football” to a new level. As I said before this game is totally customisable even down to the latest transfers available to download should players in real life depart come the transfer window in January. So is there anything that would make you want to “Transfer” FIFA 10 to a rival???
Of course, but the pro’s far out-weight the con’s. You still get the dodgy referee decisions that will have you fit to be “You Tubed” and I find the some crosses not very football friendly or accurate, in particular when running at full speed and launching a “Beckham Special” into the box from the wing the ball seems to go curving from left to right and then vice versa....defying gravity so to speak. The higher difficulty levels also seem god like hard, although no doubt a lot of hardcore gamers out there play this on the highest difficulty with ease. So all in all a complete package with incredible value for money and huge replay value, something that is distinctly lacking in €50 games on consoles. Unless PRO EVO 2010 has changed radically from the demo available to download online (Playstation Network).....Then FIFA 10 truly is the “CHAMPIONS LEAGUE” of football games. And I imagine will be for a very long time to come. |
