TOP TEN BARGIN BASEMENT GAMES

Ten Top bargin basement games

Unless you have been living under a rock you will undoubtedly have heard of Call of duty 4, Killzone 2 or Halo 3 due to the massive amount of hype surrounding their release. Some games then just appear to slip under the radar maybe you arrived late to the console market (after COD4 was released) maybe you missed them if they were released at the same time as a big title or in a flurry of new games or maybe you just want to build up your back catalogue now that there is a lull in the market. So we have rummaged through the bargin basement bins and pulled out 10 games that offer a top notch gaming experience without breaking the bank.

Condemned and Condemned 2:

Condemned first appeared on the xbox360 and the follow up made its way to the PS3 as well. They follow Ethan Thomas the disgraced series crime unit investigator. Players need to use their brains as well as their brawn in this often brutal suspense thriller.  Use whatever you find to defend yourself and the best in forensic equipment to solve the mysteries shrouding the city in darkness.

A game to really draw your in with its impressive story and dark and twisted atmosphere and will give many an hour of enjoyable game time.

Dark sector

Dark sector brings a new element to the 3rd person shooter market in the form of the throwing blade called a Glaive. Born from an infection suffered by the main character Hayden Tenno which causes inhuman abilities the Glaive is your main weapon along with the usual arsenal of guns you stuns, blast and slice your way through the enemy combining your glaive with fire and electricity and even slowing time to deliver the pain.

An excellent cover system and unique weaponry and many puzzle elements will keep you thinking as you battle you way through this one. Killer finishing moves along with the ability to slow time and pick off target around corners with a throw of the glaive make this a compelling game.

Dead space

Dead space a lot of people missed and I don’t know why it’s one of the best games of the year it is real edge of your seat stuff if you want jumps then this is for you. While this doesn’t do anything really ground breaking it does have some tricks up its sleeve zero gravity for one you can now take the fight to the ceiling use the full 360 degrees fight upside down however you like. Dead space also has an interesting line up in weapons and an interesting way of dealing with your enemies. As you are a engineer send to fix a ship that has lost contact most of your weapons are for want of a better word cutting tools, which is handy as the crew of the ship has become infected and has mutated in to horrible creatures that can only be stopped by dismembering them. Along with its incredibly tense atmosphere this is a real gem. Surround sound is a must for this one.

 Ghost recon 2

From the Tom Clancy range comes Ghost recon 2 advanced warfare this is quite an old game at this stage but still holds it’s own. It is set in 2014 and feature the Ghost’s a highly secret highly trained squad backed up with top military weaponry as they try to stop an imminent threat along the recently completed U.S/Mexico border. You have 72 hours to stop the rebels from reaching U.S. soil.

All though the single player mission is quite short at about 7 hours it is so well put together it offer hours of replay value. It also has a multiplayer feature that will offer some extra life although the mutiplayer comes nowhere near the standard of the singe player mission it is still an excellent online feature.

Half life 2 is one of the best games ever a bold statement but any one that has played them will agree, a little dated but it’s not all about HD graphics the story line is so good that you will soon be so immersed you won’t notice.

Orange box

Half life 2 was a massive success on the PC and enjoyed similar success on the 360 but after repeated delays in release dates when this arrived on PS3 many missed it. The pack includes 5 games Half life 2 episode 2 and 2 expansion packs along with the totally original Portal it also has a top notch online multiplayer side to it with Team fortress 2.

The orange box offers great value for money with a main game that will have you using fantastic weapons as you try to escape city 17. With the add ons and the brilliant Portal You will not be disappointed with this one.

Mirrors edge

Every once in a while something totally original comes along and mirrors edge does just that. it features agile couriers called runners who use the city heights to transport sensitive data away from prying eyes. This is a game with a difference you have a first person view and you run, jump, climb and slide your way across the roof tops disarming the chasing police with swift hands and even swifter feet. You start to view the city differently you begin to see the flow a box is now a spring board a plank is now a ramp a bill board is now wall to run along.

At times it can be frustrating as you keep just missing that jump and plunge to your death but its also really rewarding when you string together a combo of moves making that jump disarming the cop with a slide kick to the groin snatching his gun and finishing him off.

This game is worth picking up for its originality alone but it’s also is a solid game backed up by a decent story.

Socom Confrontation

Similar to warhawk this is an online only game and for that reason it is always quite cheap but don’t let the put you off it offer something new if you are getting tired of the COD4 run and gun style. This is all about tactics a teaming up. It is bundled with the Sony ear piece which offers HQ  chat making the whole experience far better.

Massive amounts of customisable weapons and armour add to this game and after initial problems with the servers things have settled down now and it really plays nicely. Players do take it seriously so when you start its best to use the “new to socom” games until you get up to speed with it and to get the best out of the game you need to team up if not with friend a few good games will see you making new friends quite quickly.

  Unchartered

Another Sony exclusive but one that came without the whirlwind of publicity that Killzone 2 saw, it has grown in popularity due to word of mouth and is now considered one of the better exclusive titles out there.

Its uses a excellent cover and lock on system to allow you to blast your way through this adventure looking for the 400 year old coffin of Sir Francis Drake you will be met with puzzles and mystery as the story unfolds. This is an intelligent and beautiful looking game with scenery so good you will find yourself just stopping and staring.

Bioshock

Bioshock again enjoyed success on the XBOX but again due to delays in getting a PS3 port it suffered similar to the orange box. Bioshock boast impressive graphics and a brilliant twisting story line. It is set in the underwater city called Rapture created as an underwater utopia but it has become over run by strange deformities and mechanical drones.

As you go through the game you have to collect Adam from the Little sisters small children you find from time to time. You choose how to go about getting the eve leaving you with a moral dilemma one method kills them but you receive far more eve than if you save them but each move has a its bonus’s and to make things more difficult each little sister is protected by a big daddy these mutations have been sealed into heavy deep sea diving suits and fitting with a deadly drill. Taking down these Big Daddies is no mean feat.

Bioshock has along with the usual guns an unusual weapon in the form of Plasmids these alter your DNA and gives you powers over electricity fire ice and bees !!

BioShock is a revolution in the shooter genre that will forever change the expectations for the FPS. Going beyond "run and gun corridors," a must for all gamers.
