It was a monumental task to better last year’s NBA 2K11 (arguably the best sports title of the year) but i think they have managed it, and done it in style too. Introducing Michael Jordan’s career mode last year was a stroke of genius and gave the basketball sim a welcome longevity.

This year 2K has done the impossible and made it even better, not only fixing the small annoyances from last year but also improving on all the good points. Michael Jordan is back and this time he has brought his friends, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Scottie Pippen to name a few to pack out NBA 2k 12’s Greatest mode which lets you pit the greatest players form the last 40 years against todays super stars. All the teams are unlockable to give you something to keep playing for.

The controls have been further refined to give you even greater control over everything from the footwork to the way you shoot or pass even down to which hand you use. It’s now up to you to beat the defender and make it to the hoop rather than have the game aid you. Daunting at the start but as you begin to get your fingers around it the controls become so rewarding.

Presentation is amazing the whole experience is what you expect from a US sport, loud announcers, flashy graphics and hyped up fans bopping to the pumping music. The players themselves look so real it’s scary, I found myself getting lost in the look of the game from time to time. The players don’t just look like the real thing but the even play like them, even the sweat on their skin looks real. It’s simply stunning.

Fans favourite “My Player” mode is back, My Player puts you in control of one player as you start at the bottom and try work your way up through the draft which has been made slightly easier to get going as you start with better stats. Other than that it’s what you got last year, you take your player, hit the game objectives and try to become the biggest thing in the NBA.

Association mode also returns putting you in control of the franchise, buying and selling players and the only real difference is that you can now take your game online. These two modes will keep you coming back for more all the time and will keep you playing until this time next year.

Overall : Simply the best use of the NBA licence we have seen and probably the best sports sim out there. They did the impossible and made NBA 2k12 even better than last years, which is no easy feat. Simply if you want a Basketball game then this is it.

Score 9/10
