The latest in the long series of WWE games that have been churned out on a yearly basis makes an effort to take things back to its roots. The game uses the theme of revolution within the WWE and centres in on an era within the WWE universe, The Attitude Era of the nineties where the Monday Night Wars raged on between the WWE and the WCW for ratings which arguably became one of the most memorable times in the WWE. The game introduces this mode by taking you through the most memorable moments of six different chapters taking place over a two year span. The Six chapters being the Rise of DX, Austin 3:16, the Brothers of Destruction, The Great One, Mankind, and WrestleMania XV.

These chapters take the players through such memorable moments in WWE history such as the Montreal screw job, The Undertaker and Mankind in the Hell in the Cell, Mike Tyson joining D-Generation X and the feud between Austin and the Rock. This mode also makes references to WCW in a few ways within the Era itself but mostly with a chart during the Era mode as you progress through it showing the WWE’s ratings in comparison to WCWs at these times and the key changing points for the WWE in these times.  This mode is the crown jewel within the game; any 1990’s wrestling fan that plays this game will feel and re-connect those nostalgic moments within the Attitude Era mode. The Attitude Era also gives an ‘Off Script’ storyline focusing on the epilogue of WCW into the WWE Smackdown era. It features The Godfather, Vader, Chris Jericho (1999), Edge and Christian (both 1999), Lita (2000), Trish Stratus, Eddie Guerrero and The APA.

Aside from the Attitude Era the game also has the WWE Universe Mode returning. The Universe mode gives the player control essentially over how things play out in the WWE universe, players can create their own shows for this mode, create your very own pay per views and be allowed to set a recurring theme for your PPV( for example a Pay Per View named Tables Ladders and Chairs, where every match must be a tables ladders and chairs match ). The ability to create your own storylines within the game and see them play out accordingly is also a nice feature of the Universe mode not to mention creating your own titles and arenas. The level of customisation within WWE 13 is one of its greater assets. Create a wrestler mode also returns with very in-depth customising features that players will relish to see.

Gameplay wise WWE 13 is a very fluid game, the controls, grapples and reversals system all come together very well and make matches thoroughly enjoyable.  The new WWE Live features give the game more of a realistic feeling in terms of its visual presentation. Negatives to the game is at times bugs pop up within the game such as referees slowly responding to pin attempts, some visual bugs at times and the lock on system within the game frequently changing by itself which annoyed me in matches with four players or more. DLC has been released for the game in the form of three packs; ‘Attitude Pack’ which features Gangrel, Val Venus, Goldust and more. ‘WWE Superstars Pack’ includes Tensai, Ryback, Drew McIntyre and more. The final dlc pack ‘You’re Welcome in Five Different Languages Pack’ will include Damien Sandow, Antonio Cesaro, Jimmy Uso and more and is set for a January 1st 2013 release. WWE 13 is one of the more enjoyable wrestling games I have played in a long time and is worth checking out if not for a full purchase at least for a rental.

SCORE 8/10
