Element Pictures’ production THE LOBSTER opens at No.1 in the US this weekend.

The Yorgos Lanthimos directed THE LOBSTER not only opened at number 1 in the US this weekend on the basis of takings per screen but in grossing $188,095 from just 4 locations it has also the highest per-screen-average of 2016 with an incredible $47,034.

Element Pictures Distribution and Picturehouse jointly released THE LOBSTER in Ireland and the UK last October, grossing over €2 million at the box-office with A24 now handling its US distribution.  A24 also released Element Pictures/Lenny Abrahamson’s Room in the US earlier this year where it grossed almost €13 million.

Producer Ed Guiney commented “We are all thrilled that THE LOBSTER has opened so strongly in the US. Following its tremendous international success to date it’s really gratifying that its connected with US audiences in such a seismic way.”

THE LOBSTER opened to rave reviews this weekend with The New York Times calling it a ‘Masterpiece’ and Rolling Stone calling it a ‘Brilliant, bizarre social satire.’ The Los Angeles Times commented that it ‘Offers a rich, surreal take on modern love’ with industry bible Variety calling it a ‘Wickedly funny, unexpectedly moving satire of couple-fixated society.’

THE LOBSTER is a love story set in the near future where single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel.  There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days.  If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods.  A desperate Man escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules.

It was also announced last week that Element Pictures will re-team with Yorgos for his next feature The Killing of a Sacred Deer which is due to begin production in the US this August with Colin Farrell attached.

THE LOBSTER is written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou and produced by Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Ceci Dempsey and Yorgos Lanthimos. Executive Producers are Andrew Lowe, Tessa Ross and Sam Lavender. 

THE LOBSTER is an Element Pictures, Scarlet Films, Faliro House, Haut et Court, Lemming Film co-production in association with Limp and with Irish finance for the film from the Irish Film Board.
