Child of Eden is not simply a game but rather an experience for the senses. Breath taking visuals are mixed with hearth pounding music to create a game like nothing else out there drawing players in with its hypnotic yet un-mistakenly brilliant gameplay.

Tetsuya Mizuguchi is the creative force behind the Child of Eden, his previous title Rez is still held up as a cult classic and COE is undoubtedly going to hold a similar place in the hearts of gamers despite its relatively short length.

Storyline is also thin on the ground or at least I found it quite a strange one to grasp. It is your job to remove a virus infection from within the matrix that holds all the information about everything on earth and save the girl Eden. Simple? No but it doesn’t matter.

The gameplay is an on rails shooter, as the targets appear on screen in front of you, you use one of the shooting options which include locking on with a laser or blasting them with your machine guns. This is when it starts to get interesting each shot creates a sound, for example the machine guns mimic drums so you can control the sounds by controlling your shots. The backing track is always playing you just add to it. The laser allows you to lock on to up to eight targets hitting these in time with the music gives you large bonus multipliers.

What makes the experience so brilliant is that along with the music are some of the most spectacular visual set pieces you will ever see, from full stunning HD video to computer generated whales and Eagles along with many other creatures born from a strange mind. Colours and shapes weave in and out on the screen and each one is brighter and better than the last.

COE is playable with the Kinect or with the standard controller. While the Kinect is an experience like no other and much more fun than the controller, to try and get the higher scores I found myself reverting to the control pad as I had more control. COE get very difficult very quickly and what starts out as an easy walk in the park soon as you needing to use every ounce of ability to finish the later stages.

Overall : Child of Eden is stunning looking has a brilliant soundtrack and for such a simple idea is good fun to play. It is short but it is also quite difficult, the addition of the Kinect as a option is a good idea, it gives the game an extra edge while not excluding those yet to get into motion controlled gaming and if you don’t mind looking like an idiot playing it, Child of Eden is great fun with friends.

SCORE 8.5/10
