The game that changed it all! GTA 3 is celebrating its 10th anniversary if you can believe that its been ten years already. October 2001 saw the leap from the top down early incarnations of GTA to the huge 3D open world. Liberty City was now the hunting ground for Claude, a small time gangster with big ambitions.
Along with the accolades came plenty of controversy, the violence, bad language and sexual references gave the media a field day. But GTA was far more than just a foul mouthed violent release for gamers it was also quite ingenious and marked a changing point in the industry that would still be felt to this very day. Bringing the 3D world to life was no easy task, and through using a mix of third person, driving mechanics and the non linear open world missions it revolutionized the industry, being able to pretty much go where ever you wanted to go and do what ever you felt like doing had never been seen before.
Of course the 9/11 attacks on New York had happened only a few weeks before its release and led to the game being delayed as the team worked out a few issues they were no longer comfortable with.
GTA 3 was rightly revered by both fans and critics alike and still sits as the king on the PS2 remaining the all time highest scoring game on the format and selling well over 14million copies.
The limited edition 10th anniversary edition will be out later this week on iOS and Android devises and will serve as a wonderful reminder of what gaming was like 10 years ago, below is the latest trailer for GTA3.
