Ghost Recon has taken its time getting back to market but it has been worth the wait as Ubisoft push the boundaries and deliver a stunning looking, incredibly enjoyable and engaging shooter. If you have been worried that the series has been infected by the COD bug then put your concerns to one side. While it is fair to say that this outing has received a Hollywood make over it still retains its original dedication to thoughtful strategy and tactics.
The Ghosts of course have a huge arsenal of gadgets to work with probably the most commonly used one will be the drone. This allows you to get an aerial view of the battle field, to mark targets and get your team in position. Other new technologies at disposal include magnetic goggles that work in a similar way to night vision goggles but let you see through sand storms.
The Warhound acts as a mobile mortar and rocket launcher. Set on four legs hence giving it its hound nickname this huge metal beast walks into battle with you offering protection as you can get into cover being it and launch missiles and mortars at the enemies in front of you. Making use of the technology is the key to success in the game as a run and gun approach will just simply not work no matter how good you are.
As always with Ghost Recon the story is brilliant, but it is the gameplay that really makes the game click. Everything is polished to perfection, you move around within incredible looking environments, you interact with that environment incredibly well. Moving from cover to cover, through doors and climbing over obstacles with ease.
Cover plays a huge part in the game so it is essential that you can move into cover quickly but even more important is that you can move between cover just as easily. when you are in cover you can preset the next spot and hold the X button to sprint from cover to cover.
Pretty much everything in the game has been polished within a inch of its life, the combat is perfect but it is the attention to detail that really sets the game apart. Gunsmith allows users to swap out any part of their weapon to suit their own styles. Players with a Kinect can make use of its controller free control and can strip down and remake guns in seconds with a wave of your hand.
Where Ghost Recon really starts to shine is in CO-OP. The game has been built to support 4 player co-op and it shows. Rather than being a gimmick tagged on it improves it completely. While your AI team mates are pretty good nothing substitutes being able to chat in real time with your teammates and co-ordinate attacks. The helicopter scenes where you are split into ground and air roles is a very clever use of the co-op system, two players offer support from the air the others work on the ground.
In addition to all that multiplayer fans are catered for too, with another strong mode. Four game types are available as well as Guerrilla mode which is Ubisoft’s take on the Horde game mode.
Overall : Ghost Recon delivers on just about every front, it looks and plays amazingly well, the story mode is hugely entertaining and the additional co-op and multiplayer modes not only offer another way to play but a proper addition to the game.
While it has gone a bit over the top in some sections and the action might be seen as a bit out of context with the series, it is not enough to take away form one of the best games you will play this year.
SCORE 9.5/10
