The original Dead Island was announced at E3 2006 by Techland but suffered from a series of delays which led to a new direction for the game. A CGI trailer set the internet alight with its controversial use of the child getting killed by zombies. When the game released it was met with mainly positive reviews from both media outlets and customers which led to a sequel of sorts.

Dead Island: Riptide is a spin-off to the original Dead Island and has a lot going for it although it doesn’t move on too much from the original. The game is set on a brand new island, a new boat for use in water sections, some new hub defense missions, a new weapon proficiency system allows you to make better use of the 4 types of weapons (Bladed, Blunt, Melee and Firearms). It also has a few new weapons such as staffs and throwing knives, mixed with the old reliable weapons like a Flare guns and boat oars.

There is a new melee-oriented character, but you also have the chance to import your original Dead Island characters.Playing the game is a lot of fun but it still has many of the same complaints that held the original back. The mission formulas are the same so expect to see similar set ups that ask you to go find this item then give it to the quest giver to get a new mission all the time killing zombie.

There isn’t much variety in indoor area’s either as after you been in the first cave and the first few houses you have seen it all and they start to repeat quite often.

The Dead Zones are the exception as even though it is an area you have seen before there is a mini boss version of a special zombie with a unique backstory which makes things a bit more interesting.

Overall: It might not be a full sequel in the traditional sense and many of the old problems are still present from the original but in saying that there really is a lot of fun to be had here if you’re a fan of zombies and RPG’s with random looting thrown in. For others that weren’t fans of the original nothing will change your opinion as it’s more of the same.

Overall Rating: 3/5
